Pellston Regional Airport Hosts Char-Em ISD College for Kids Aviation Program
For three days in June 2017, 11 middle school aged students from the Char-Em ISD area got “up close and personal” with the world of aviation thanks to the ISD’s College for Kids program and the Pellston Regional Airport.
Dean Paul, Superintendent of Alanson Public Schools and head of the Aviation Science and Technology Program, led the students during their three-day exploration. “There was tons of enthusiasm,” said Paul. “There are many job opportunities in the aviation industry, so it’s great to plant the seeds early! A couple of the kids were knowledgeable about the industry, and many of them have been inspired to explore the aviation world further.”
During the College for Kids program, the students were instructed on the basics of aviation and exposed to behind the scenes logistics of running an airport. They were given opportunities to interact with pilots, TSA agents, baggage handlers, and maintenance personnel. Due to the busy summer season at the airport, the students were able to witness numerous planes landing – one of the owners even invited the students to tour the inside of his jet. At the end of the program, each of the students completed a session in a flight simulator where they were able to virtually fly around the Mackinac Bridge and feel what it is like to fly an actual plane.
The program was a huge success, and several of the students are interested in further exploring opportunities in aviation. In fact, one of the students already has his sights set on joining the Aviation Science and Technology Program when he enters High School.
Char-Em ISD plans on offering the program again in 2018 as part of their College for Kids program.
